| Simon's Town:
Simon's Town was named by early dutch governor of the Cape Simon van de Stel It was really developed after 1742 when the Dutch East India Company declared that from then on, during May to August, their vessels would anchor in the calm waters of False Bay. The first British occupation took place in 1795. During the 2nd world war Simon's Town became a British naval base and it was in 1957 that they handed it back to the South African Navy. There are Naval and Historic museums to visit, a wonderful yachting harbour for sailing and paddling. Mountain hikes, golf, cycling and restuarants all within easy reach. Simon's Town is a 40 mins drive from Cape Town and from here, will take the same time to drive to the Stellenbosch winelands. |
